Mid 1990s

Description

Based on the 1991 retro superhero film The Rocketeer, this mysterious attraction would have strapped the guests into rocket-packs of their own and jetted them around in a V-shaped formation. There's not much information available about this attraction, not even when it was designed. Apparently, there was an attracted designed around 1990, but this was scrapped when the film wasn't as successful as Disney executives had hoped.

But as well as this, the person who provided the concept art we have on our page says they were drawn for an attraction planned only a few years ago. We're not sure if the original ride was brought out of the dusty drawers of uncompleted plans, or whether this was an entirely new plan based on the same source material. Either way, neither of the attractions saw the light of day.

Why Wasn't It Built?

Unfortunately, the film release didn't do as well as hoped and the attraction was abandoned.

Legacy

Whilst they've yet to show up at Disney, I wonder if this ride influenced the design of flying rollercoasters that would later show up in amusement parks across the world. Disney did design a flying rollercoaster that never got built; Fire Mountain.
